I.     Biological bases of behavior Students should recognize biological psychology as a perspective of psychology. Specifically, students should recognize: 1.     The organization of the nervous system into the CNS and PNS: †¢Ã‚     The Central Nervous System-CNS- Brain and Spinal Cord. The Peripheral Nervous System-PNS- are the Nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. 2.     The structure and functions of neurons: †¢Ã‚     Neurons are the basic building blocks of the nervous system. The human central nervous system contains about 100 billion neurons. Neurons have a communicative role in the nervous system. Neurons can receive, integrate, and transmit information. 3.     How neurotransmitters are related to behavior: †¢Ã‚     Acetylcholine (Ach) - Activates motor neurons controlling skeletal muscles. Contributes to the regulation of attention, arousal, and memory. Some Ach receptors stimulated by nicotine (the nicotine acts like Ach itself and binds to receptor sites for Ach). †¢Ã‚     Dopamine (DA) – Contributes to control of voluntary movement, pleasurable emotions. Decreased levels associated with Parkinson’s disease. Over activity at DA synapses with schizophrenia. Cocaine and amphetamine elevate activity at DA synapses. †¢Ã‚     Norephinephrine (NE) – Contributes to modulation of mood and arousal. Cocaine and amphetamines elevate activity at NE synapses. †¢Ã‚     Serotonin (SHT) – Involved in regulation of sleep and wakefulness, eating, and aggression. Abnormal levels may contribute to depression and OCD. Prozac and Zoloft are antidepressant drugs that affect serotonin. †¢Ã‚     GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) – Most common inhibitory NT. Valium and Xanex (also alcohol) are anti-anxiety drugs that work at GABA synapses. GABA appears to be responsible for much of the inhibition in the CNS. GABA contributes to the regulation of anxiety. 4.     The specialized functions of the brain's hemisphere: The Hindbrain consists of the medulla, oblongata, pons, and the cerebellum. †¢Ã‚     The medulla contains 3 vital centers: †¢Ã‚     Cardiac center- This controls rate and force of the heart beat †¢Ã‚     Vasomotor center-adjust blood vessel diameter to regulate blood pressure and reroute blood from one part of the body to another. †¢Ã‚     Respirator centers- control the rate and depth of breathing. Pons – contains nuclei that relay signals from the cerebrum to the cerebellum. It is concerned with sleep, hearing, equilibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expressions, facial sensations, respirations, swallowing, bladder control and posture. Cerebellum- mostly concerned with muscular coordination. Midbrain- Short segment of the brainstem that connects the hindbrain and forebrain. Reticular Formation- runs vertically through the core of the midbrain, pons, and medulla, it functions modulations of muscle reflexes, breathing, and pain perception; it has an equal role in the regulation of sleep and arousal.

Contemporary Aboriginal Issues Assignment 3- Essay Topic 3: Discuss the political struggle for recognition of indigenous rights to land. In your answer, consider the benefits and limitations of the Native Title Act and recent United Nations criticisms of the current Act. For years we have witnessed the Indigenous population’s political struggle for recognition of rights to Australian land. At times the effort appears to be endless and achieving recognition almost seems impossible. Native Title and Land claims have become a step closer in achieving this recognition; however, for land rights to exist in an absolute form, they cannot exist as a mere Act of Parliament but must form a fundamental part of the Australian Constitution. This seemingly gigantic task is part of the incessant political struggle that the Indigenous population will continue to face. The United Nation’s is an integral part of the political struggle between the Australian government and the Indigenous people and have on many occasions fought to raise the issue of human rights violation within the Australian constitution. When Captain Cook arrived in 1788 and the colonisation of Australia began, the Indigenous people of Australia struggled and fought to protect their country from infringement, theft and violation. The Indigenous people were faced with a dominant military force and an extremely different view of the world. Over one hundred years ago, the colonists understood this land to be open for the taking and the rightful first owners were treated as intruders on their own land. One word that has changed the world
Do you love apples? Well, Ido love apples! However, it is not because it's nutritious, instead, it haschanged world. Why? Actually, in the longprocess of history, there are three apples that have exerted significant impacton us. One was bitten by Eva, one fell on Newton's head, and another on is inthe hand of Steven Jobs. The three great apples have shaped a brand-new worldwith a fire-new outlook.The three great apples have signified a usion of curiosity,intelligence, innovation and technology. The three great apples have endowed uswith a window to look through an unknown world, to explore, to innovate, toprogress and to advance. Eva's apple is a metaphor of human's curiosity. Curiosity is a child-like sense of wonder, making usquestion things that others do not even notice. My mom told be that when im with her tummy bear she’s always angry, can’t sleep well and eat lots of food. She was always fighting with my father that time. During my christening, they told me I have more than 20 Godmothers and Godfathers. Back when I’m months old, my mom said, she doesn’t like other people kissing me, except to all my Godparents, because she doesn’t like me to smell bad or even get dirty. She even told me that I cry a lot. She also told me that I only have 3 colors in all my clothes; pink, yellow and white. I’m so fit and sexy way back then because of my mom, she doesn’t want me to go outside and play with other children. They always put in it some cookies with a house drawn to it. But when I started to learn how to read, it was, Cream ‘O cookies . Then, during my Kinder days, I became a Twinkle Star in our Girl Scout. I was so shy and as I remember, I was so sick. Back then, if I’m not feeling well and my tummy is aching, I immediately throw up. I cry and cry because all I wanted that time is to go back home, I really hate mosquito bites. In Grade 1, during the Foundation day, our class presents a dance and I was in the back row because I don’t know how to dance. That’s my weakness, so I do everything, and practice a lot, then in grade 2, I was in the front row and became the leader of the group, and our principal was sitting in front of me. There was a point in my Grade 1 life that my teacher always gets mad at me, because I always bring attitude to school. It’s because at home, I am a spoiled brat, my parents always give me what I want . In Grade 6, I always make fights, I’m so bully and I am so confident in myself, because I am always a muse in our class . And in High school, there was a time, that some of the school leaders choose me to be their representative as Ms. Intrams. I became 1st runner up in the Ms. Girl scout of all entire Makati. I also became Lakambini SA buwan ng wika, which makes my mom proud. All about the that special event in my entire high school life, my mom is always there to support me. Even if the gown is expensive, she still bought it for me. And as I remember, she even registered me to one of this workshop, which is a ramp model. She wants me before to be an artist. Half a month of my 3rd year high school, I met a church that’s â€Å"Victory Fort†, that was the time I realize everything. What Christ did for me, â€Å"Salvation†. It made me realize how strong the Gospel is, the moment Christ sacrifice himself at the cross, to forget all our sins and to let us all live. God reveals so many things to me, and during March 23, 2013 I was baptized with the Holy Water. I was born again. I know the real Elaine, the real me. When I was in my last year of High school, it was the happiest year of my life as a high school student. All of my classmates are so close to me and we all wishes to have pictures together with all our teachers. And during our JS Prom, I felt so elegant with my dress, my friends were shocked with the way I dressed up. It was way too far from the real Elaine. Whenever I’m bored or nothing else to do, I just enjoyed playing chess with my siblings, friends or parents. The people involve in this church, they were the ones who let me see how important my life is, my body and they remind me what did Jesus Christ do to me just for me to live and how strong His Love, Mercy and Grace for us. The Medicines Act 1968 Regulates the supply and manufacture of medicines and defines the three categories of medicine: Prescription only, pharmacy medicines and general sales list. This affects my work in that it tells me which types of medicine I can simply pick up over the counter (for example, if someone I supported had a minor problem such as a cold, by consulting this legislation I would know which drugs I would be able to pick up without a prescription).It also categorises the medication which I currently administer and gives me an idea of how different types of medications are classified. For example, many times in the setting I work in, medication orders will be repeat prescriptions. For this, correct information must be supplied: name of service user, name and strength of medication and amount ordered sufficient for the time p eriod. The Misuse of Drugs Act 1972 Categorises banned substances into bands A, B, and C. This tells me that administering certain drugs would result in me breaking the law. It outlines what is legal to administer and what isn’t.Also this act outlines the legal requirement to store controlled drugs in locked cabinets and keep a record (controlled drugs register) of stock numbers, expiry dates etc. At our workplace we administer several controlled drugs such as diazepam, so this legislation affects me in the way that is outlines my legal responsibilities for storing and safely administering these drugs. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 This act informs me of mine and my employer’s duties at work and tells me what is required of my employer to ensure the working environment is safe. Care Standards Act 2000Establishes national minimum standards in order to meet the needs of the people we support. For example, some of the people we support like to administer their own me dication and all information regarding their medication must be available for them to access at any time. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 This act outlines the requirements of employers to protect their employees from the hazards of substances used in the workplace. Medication comes under this act and it outlines principles for recording, safekeeping, handling and disposal of medicines, all things we deal with on a regular basis.
